Summer learning journey

In 1990, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, universities and polytechnics started charging students money to go to school. Prior to then, it had been free to go to university or to a polytechnic. Since 1990, students have had to pay thousands of dollars to attend post-secondary (after high school) education.

The new Labour government have promised to give up to three years of free post-secondary education to all New Zealanders by 2020!

On your blog, tell us what you think. Should students have to pay money (tuition fees) to go to university? Why or why not?
BONUS POINTS: 18

I think people should pay because you can't just go to university with out paying because you have to pay because they teach you a lot of stuff and for a long long time.

Free Education:
Advantages:
People that do want to learn but they don't have the money to go to university.

Disadvantages:
People go to school just to have a party and muck around.

Paid Education:
Advantages:People that go to university and pay they don't muck around because the money that they paid comes from their pocket and if they fail then they don't get the money back.So they work hard.

Disadvantages:
If people want to learn but they don't have money they can't learn.

  1. Kia Ora Diego,

My name is Jordan and I'm the Kootuitui (Papakura, South Auckland) cluster manager for the Summer Learning Journey.

Well done for completing so much of the Summer Learning Journey programme! Thanks for telling us what you think about the prospect of free education with University.
I really appreciate that you've given us both advantages and disadvantages; I'm curious though— why do you think that students should have to pay?

    Cheers,

    Jordan.
