Bonus Activity: Sweet Tooth

When World War II ended, a number of people from Europe moved to New Zealand looking

for a peaceful place to live and raise a family. When they came, they

brought recipes and foods from their native countries with them, including hamburgers, pizza

and other delicious foods.

I usually have a chocolate chip cookie with my tea. I love biscuits! What is your favourite

sweet treat or dessert? Use google to find a recipe for it. Type the recipe out on your blog.

Summer learning journey

In 1990, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, universities and polytechnics started charging students money to go to school. Prior to then, it had been free to go to university or to a polytechnic. Since 1990, students have had to pay thousands of dollars to attend post-secondary (after high school) education.

The new Labour government have promised to give up to three years of free post-secondary education to all New Zealanders by 2020!

On your blog, tell us what you think. Should students have to pay money (tuition fees) to go to university? Why or why not?
BONUS POINTS: 18

I think people should pay because you can't just go to university with out paying because you have to pay because they teach you a lot of stuff and for a long long time.

Free Education:
Advantages:
People that do want to learn but they don't have the money to go to university.

Disadvantages:
People go to school just to have a party and muck around.

Paid Education:
Advantages:People that go to university and pay they don't muck around because the money that they paid comes from their pocket and if they fail then they don't get the money back.So they work hard.

Disadvantages:
If people want to learn but they don't have money they can't learn.

In the 1980s it became increasingly common for students to graduate from high school and take a year off to travel and experience the world. This year was often referred to as the ‘Big OE’ or ‘Big Overseas Experience.’ A number of kiwis headed to places like Australia and England to live and work before returning to New Zealand to finish their studies.

Imagine that you are a student in the 1980s and you’re about to graduate from high school. Where would you like to go on your big OE? On your blog tell us which country you would visit and give us three (3) reasons for your choice. Find some pictures on the internet of things that you would like to see and do in this country.

I’d love to go to Switzerland and spend lots of time in the mountains, learning how to ski!

I would like to go to America because I want to explore America and because I would like to go to Disneyland and because My favorite game is taken place in America.

Day 5: Coming to an End

Activity 1: VE Day!
After six long years of fighting, World War II finally came to an end in 1945. The entire country
was ecstatic and parties were thrown all over New Zealand to celebrate VE Day (Victory in
Europe). Imagine that you were living in New Zealand in 1945 and you had to plan a VE
day party at your house. Who would you invite? What would you do to celebrate?

On your blog, tell us all about your (imaginary) VE party. If it was me, I would invite all of my
closest friends and family over to my house for a big barbecue. We would eat hamburgers
and play basketball in the driveway. Some of us would probably walk to the local beach to
play soccer on the beach and to go for a swim (if the weather was warm enough)!

I would invite my friends and family over to my party and I could make BBQ. After we eat e
very one will go to the pools after the pools we can go back to my house a relax and then ev
ery one goes home.

Bonus Activity: In Flanders Fields

As the new century dawned, New Zealanders settled into a period of relative calm. The calm la
sted for about 15 years but came to a sudden end in 1914 when World War I erupted in Europe
. The war lasted for almost five years and claimed the lives of 18,000 New Zealanders.

It also claimed the lives of thousands of men and women from countries around the world. Every
year, we remember these brave men and women on ANZAC Day (25 April). Many people go to
a special Anzac Day ceremony where they read a special poem that was written for the fallen s
oldiers. The poem is called ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae.

Read the poem. On your blog, tell us what you think of the poem. Do you like it? How does it ma
ke you feel?

It makes me feel very lucky to live in a beautiful, safe country like New Zealand. It also makes m
e feel sad for those who died in the war and for their families. I think that we are very lucky that t
hey went to war and fought for our freedom. What do you think?

I feel lucky because I lucky that I did not go o war and I feel lucky that we protected by people w
ho are fighting for our country.I feel sad too because people are dying in war.

blade runner.jpg
There is a new movie out in cinemas at the moment called Blade Runner 2049.

hrough time and that you can see what the world will look like in 2099.

from now). What kind of houses will people live in? What will they eat? Where will they
work?

In the mid-1930s, things began to change for the better in New Zealand. More people were
able to find work and receive a steady paycheck. They were still careful, however, with their
money and rarely, if ever, bought treats or gifts for one another.

Imagine that you were able to travel back in time to visit a family in the 1930s. What special
gifts or treats would you like to bring with you? I would likely bring blocks of Whittaker’s
chocolate, bags of Jet Planes and Pineapple Lumps, healthy food snacks, clothing, and
games for the children. What about you?

If I went back in time I would bring them food,McDonald,KFC,Chocolate,A new car,a new TV ,
Sky,Computer,A new telephone,I could show them YouTube,Phone, even songs, a new bed,
puzzles for the kids,Money to help them with their kids so they can go school,Brand new
clothes and WiFi.

Summer learning journey

During this period, people struggled to find work both here at home and overseas. It was a
really tough time for people living in the Great Plains of the United States because they we
re hit with a huge drought that lasted for most of the decade. Many crops were damaged
and farmers were not able to make enough money to feed their families.

Imagine that you were alive in the 1930s. What could you have done to help these families
? On your blog, list three different ways that you could raise funds for families to help them
buy food and clothing. Be as creative as you can with your fundraising ideas!

  1. I would work hard to earn money and give them the money.
  2. Or I would earn my money and by the cloths for them.

Activity 1: Chasing Great
Over the past 17 years New Zealand has experienced a number of sporting highlights, perhaps none larger than the back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015. In both competitions our national rugby team, the All Blacks, was captained by a man named Richie McCaw. He is arguably one of the best rugby players of all time. A movie called Chasing Great was recently created to document his incredible rugby career.

Please watch the trailer for Chasing Great and read about Richie McCaw online. On your blog tell us three things that you learned about Richie that you did not know beforehand. What else would you like to know about Richie?

1.Richie McCaw never gives up on his dream.
2.He played rugby when he was a  kid.
3.He did not know the all blacks until the 87 cup
4.The most challenging thing to him is to be able to perform.

Summer learning journey

2000, the country of New Zealand celebrated when Russell Coutts and his sailing team won their second straight America’s Cup. This was the first time that a team from New Zealand had won back-to-back championships! Many people celebrated the victory with their friends and family.

On your blog, tell us what you and your family do to celebrate special events, such as birthdays. Do you have a special meal or go to a specific place? In our house, we usually make a pizza and bake a special cake. What about you?

When it is someones birthday we just have a little party. We have cake raw fish and sometimes pizza but when it is someone's 5th birthday or 21st birthday then we do a massive party. When you turn 21 then you get a key. We usually do pork raw fish and all of that stuff. We celebrate your 5th birthday because it is your first day of school. When you turn 21 we celebrate big because it is the key to freedom.

Activity 2: Lord of the Rings
Arguably one of the most famous movie trilogies of all time, The Lord of the Rings, was filmed in New Zealand. All three movies were directed by a New Zealander named Peter Jackson. The first movie was released in 2001, the second in 2002 and the third in 2003. The movies cost an estimated $300 million to produce!

Imagine that instead of spending the money on the movies, Peter Jackson decided to give all of this money to you. Lucky you! On your blog, tell us what you would do with $300 million dollars. How would you spend it? It is a lot of money so please think carefully about it and spend it wisely :-)

First I would buy a house.  Secondly I would spend my money on food then I will get a job so I can have more money.Thirdly I would get my driver licence Then I would save up for a low rider with hydraulics.I would buy an x box one.If I have any money left then I would buy me a little treat. Then  When I make more money I would go overseas.  Then I would save the rest of my money in case it is someone's birthday or Christmas or Halloween or Easter any of does cases that is why I saved up.

Watch this short clip from Country Calendar. What do you think would be the most interesting and/or challenging things about being a farmer? Would you would like to be a farmer when you are older. Why/why not? Give us, at least, two reasons to support your answer

I would not like to be a farmer because we have to get up early in the morning and they have to work in the hot hot sun.

The challenging things about being a farmer is to always remember to lock the gate feed the animals and shave the sheep's that why it is challenging being a farmer. Two things I like to be a farmer is that we get free food and we get to play with the animals.

Imagine that you are a teacher, and design your own classroom. What would it look like? What furniture would you have? I would love to have some beanbags for reading on.

Draw a floorplan of your classroom (either in Google Draw or on paper) and upload it to your blog. Describe what is special about your classroom and why you designed it this way.

I’ve drawn a classroom with pink carpet and bright coloured tables. I also included a kitchen so that we can do cooking every day and a HUGE bookshelf because I love to read! What would you like to see in your classroom?

on your blog. If you’ve seen the movie, you can include your favourite part! Tell us as much as you can about the movie. What is it about? Who are the main characters in the movie? What do they do in the movie? Where do they go?

My favorite part of the movie is when Maui sang his song to Moana. It was my favorite part because it was funny. The ocean chose Moana to return the heart of Tafiti. So Moana finds Maui and Maui help’s Moana return the heart of Tafiti. The main characters are Maui,Moana, grandma and the dad and the mum. They return the heart of Tafiti. They go to the ocean.
