Activity 2: After your great visit to the Otorohanga bird house it is time to hop back onto the bus and head towards the Hawke’s Bay – your resting place for the evening. Hawke’s Bay is a beautiful region of New Zealand. It is known for its wineries and gorgeous scenery. When you arrive in Napier, the largest city in the region, you go for a walk through Waitangi Regional Park and notice that many of the leaves on the native trees have been damaged. Curious Kiwi tells you that they were damaged by possums, non-native predators, from Australia. People in New Zealand are working hard to trap and kill these predators. Their goal is to remove all of the possums (and other predators) by 2050. Go to the Predator Free 2050 website’ to read more about their work.

On your blog, tell us whether you agree that New Zealand should be predator free. In your opinion, is it right to kill all of the predators (eg. possums) or should we just leave them alone? On your blog tell us what you think and give us, at least, three reasons why you think this way.
I think we should leave them and help them  because…..
1.I think we should leave them alone because what happens if the mum is going out to get something and the mother died and there is nobody to look after the babies and nobody [0 to feed them and then the babies might die because the didn’t get to eat.
2.I think we should  help the predators with their family and feed them food so they don’t kill any more animals. They won’t kill any more animals because they are full  because we gave them food to eat.
3.I think we should not kill the predators because it is very sad if you lose a family member because I felt the feeling when one of my family member died.

That's why I think we should leave them alone.

  1. Hi Diego,

I found your reasons for leaving predators alone quite interesting, and I can understand why you take that stance thanks to your convincing reasons. I feel as though they were to provoke sympathy, and rightfully so - killing off animals cuts off their lives and it can affect their animal family.

But when dealing with pests and predators, we cannot guarantee that once they are fed other food, that they will stop their bad ways.

And remember to add a title to your posts. Otherwise, good work, Diego!

  2. Hi Diego!
I absolutely love this blog of yours as it is truly what you feel and what you think! It's interesting your view on how predators have a family and a mum. We tend to forget that they too have a family. As Willy said, even if we feed them enough, it does not mean that'll stop there bad behavior.
    Keep up the blogging!
    Mum x
